William Austin Ingram
(June 14, 1898 – June 2, 1943) was an American
college football
player and coach. He served as the head football coach at
The College of William & Mary
(1922),
Indiana University
(1923–1925), the
United States Naval Academy
(1926–1930), and the
University of California, Berkeley
(1931–1934), compiling a career record of 75–42–9. Ingram's
1926 Navy team
went 9–0–1 and was recognized as a
national champion
by the
Boand System
and the Houlgate System. Ingram was also known by the nickname "
Navy Bill
", due to his background at
Annapolis
. He died in his sleep while serving as a Major in the Marine Corps. He was inducted into the
College Football Hall of Fame
as a coach in 1973.
