Matt A. Barreto

Matthew Alejandro Barreto, Ph.D. is a political scientist, author, and co-founder of the national polling and research firm Barreto Segura Partners Research (BSP Research).

Barreto is currently Professor of Political Science and Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles where his teaching and research focuses on Latino political behavior and public opinion. In 2024 Barreto was a pollster and advisor to the Harris-Walz presidential campaign according to the New York Times and NBC News, focusing on Hispanic and Latino voters. In 2020 he was a pollster for the Biden Presidential campaign and in 2021 was named senior advisor to the Biden White House-aligned group Building Back Together.

In 2007 Barreto co-founded the polling firm [https://latinodecisions.com/about/ Latino Decisions] with Dr. Gary Segura and Pacific Market Research, as a political consulting firm specializing in Latino voter behavior. In 2021 Barreto and Segura left Latino Decisions to form a new Latino-owned political consulting firm, Barreto Segura Research Partners ([http://www.bspresearch.com BSP Research, LLC]).

As an academic researcher, Barreto has prepared independent reports and given testimony in several lawsuits challenging voter identification laws in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas, North Carolina, and North Dakota and his research has been cited by State and Federal courts in striking down voter identification laws. His 2013 scholarly book, ''Change They Can't Believe In: The Tea Party and Reactionary Politics in America'', co-authored with Dr. Christopher Parker won an American Political Science Association Best Book Award, and his 2014 book ''Latino America: How America's Most Dynamic Population is Poised to Transform the Politics of the Nation'' was reviewed by the ''Wall Street Journal'', Washington Post and Publishers Weekly, and was featured in interviews on MSNBC, PBS, C-SPAN, NPR, and Univision.
