Summary: | Videotex is one of recent technologies which combines computers, telecommunication and electronics. It permits the user interactive access through normal telephones lines to the pages of information stored at the videotex centre and displayed on a standard television set or a special video terminal. The objective of this project is to improve the procedures in information retreival in a tree-structured or menu selection system that will both benefit the users, Information Providers (IPs), and the supplier of the service. All major videotex systems are based on the tree-strucutred database in which first-hand users has to follow strictly the routings set by Information Providers to get to the desired information. With the first enhancement routine, users can obtain the contents of the information stored in the system's database along with their respective page number. Hence users can then key in for the desired information. This routine can also be used at airport terminals to display the arrival and departure times for the public. With the second enhancement, important announcements can be publicised immediately to the users. A scanner is used to scan a text page which contains the information typed in by a typist or typed with a word processing software. A small program will then format the text page into a videotex page format for easy retrieval by the videotex system. The system will be interrupted manually at the videotex computer which will retrieve and display the formatted page immediatelly.
