Summary: | The purpose of this study was to investigate the reading strategies ofsuccessful readers when they processed scicentific texts. The weak readerswere also studied to observe their patterns of strategies so as to enablea comparison of the two groups to be conducted. The next question was tofind out if trainng would improve the reading strategies of these weak readers. The main tool of elicting data was the think-aloud method which tappedthe flow of cognitive activities going on in the participants' minds duringthe reading process. The findings of the study revealed that the successfulreaders employed a greater variety of eading strategies compared to theirless able counterparts. The weak readers were linited in their repertoire ofresources and sdopted the bottom-up strategies as opposed to the succesfulreaders' top-down approach to reading. Among the weak readers' ineffectivestrategies which accounted for their failure of deriving maximum comprehension of the texts were re-reading and the continuous need to look up meaningsof words. It could also be concluded form this study that SL readers whoare linguistically deficient can compensate for this inadequacy by applyingthe higher level of processing such as relating text to prior knowledge and using background knowledge, to be able to successfully comprehend a scientific text. |
