description This study attempted to identify the communicative events that occur in one particular discourse community, the Display Monitor Department of a Japanaese-based multi-national company. Subsequently, the rules that govern these events were identified. The study spanned a period of ten weeks, and complete participant observation was the primary technique employed in the data gathering process. This research method was supplemented by unstructured interviews and analysis of documents such as reports. It was discovered the at the communicative events and consequently the rules governing them, are very much influenced by the management culture of this organisation, and by the context of the situation. Events like the daily briefings, the weekly assembly, and both the weekly and monthly meetings indicate the management philosophy of information sharing at all levels. On-line exchanges and brainstorming sessions reflect the urgency of events occurring during working hours, hence the concise nature of those events.
