description | The problem of children playground in a congested city area ha slong been causing concern, especially in high density areas, where there are residential flats. Educationists have come to view play not as an unproductive activity bua as forming an essential part of the physical, social and mental development of teh child. Children are constantly testing their physical power, discovering their limitations, strengths and physical premises. If a playgorund does not not provide sufficient chalenges, the child will seek them elsewhere, for example on a side walk, street,c arpark and etc. This cometimes will cause danger to the child. A study with regard to these aspects was undertaken at three different areas of residential flat, i.e. :- 1. Perumahan Pangsa Tunku Abd. rahman, jalan Pekeliling. 2. Perumahan pangsa Sulaiman Court. 3. Perumahan pangsa Jalan Shaw. It is to be noted that this study is not an attempt to prove or to determine what empirical basis is there for critising children's playground, but it is hoped that this study will draw the attention of the authorities concerned to organise a more relevant and in - depth study. The information gathered in this study can provide a basis reference to the topic which are to be undertaken an emphasized. The findings of th study can be summarised into these four headings. First; The dissatisfaction of the childred arises due to the inadequate and unsatisfactory condition of the play facilities. Thsi problem is caused by both improper planning and lack of understanding on the provide equipment that gives a wide range of choice, varieties of experience and offering a child much opportunities. Second; It is found that the location of children playground is not suitable. For playground situated at perumahan Pangsa Tunku Abdul Rahman, jalan Pekeliling and Perumahan Pangsa Jalan Shpow they are located beside the road and close to the living unit. This is due to the dangers which are bound to happen to the children and the lack of privacy to the residens living on the ground floor. Third; The size of playground provided is less than 0.5 acre. This compares unfavourably with the requuirement of the planning department and reflects the lack of facilities. and lastly; Dissatisfactory conditions of the environemnt provided. The major of existing playgrounds are still of the level concrete slab type, with fixed equipment chosen form an iron monger's. rarely is there much grass, shady trees or a place for children and parent's relaxation and the children are increasingly condemmed to play in such a harsh, " stark desert" of hard surfacing. |
