description | Hotels have been called people's palaces. While functioning as vitally needed social centers, they must create an image of affluence, comfort, and service. To achieve this blend of multifaced function and glamour rivaling that of a movie set is no simple task. Hotels are among the most complicated buildings to design. In this new book, Henry End, an internationally recognized interior designer who specializes in hotels, surveys the subject in a sequel to his highly respected text, Interiors Book of Hotels and Motor Hotels. The author begins by surveying the tremendous developments that have taken place in the hotel industry during the last 15 years since his first book was published. "Why a Hotel" reviews the history of modern hotels and shows how times have changed with today's feasibility studies. The necessary interaction of architect, engineer, and interior designer with the hotel's owner and management is covered in "The Design Team," which includes a section on the interior designer's responsibilities. "The Consultants" describes the role of the lightning expert, graphics specialist, landscape architect, and food service supplier. A case studyof the Hotel Nacionale in Rio de Janeiro is the local point of the discussion in "Types of Hotels." which defines the different problems that urban, resort, and airport hotels must solve. End takes you on a guided tour in "Hotel Spaces and TheirFunction" as he critically apppraise what essential design elements are needed for each area. Another chapter deals with "Hotel Rehabilitation," which is sure to increase in the future as building costs soar. Presentations to clients are dealt with in "Design Procedures and Techniques," followed by "Purchasing and On-Site Supervision." The future of the hotel industry is projected in "On the Drawing Board." Included in Standards, Schedules, and Contracts" are Sheraton's Interior Design Quality Standards, Hyatt's Architectural Standards, and ASID and AIA contracts. A thoroughly illustrated reference for all members of the hotel design team-architects, engineers, graphics and lighting consultants, landscape architects, as well as interior desigmers-this book is equally useful to owners and managers concerned with providing luxurious yet functional hotel facilities. |
