Description
Summary:This thesis presents a detailed characterization study on the use of quickly on slime obtained from an ex-mining pond in Malim Nawar, Perak. The tests conducated for this study were plasticity, compaction and triaxial compression tests. Several variables were considered for this study, namely the effect of curing time, the effect of varying moisture content and finally the effect of immersion. Comprehensive discussions were also held with regard to probable correlations on the behaviour of compacted treated soil from the UU and CIU tests. The engineering characteriistics of quicklime treated slime are as follows: 1. in 100 days curing, the peak deviator stress with 10% quicklime increased 3.0 times compared with that for 1 day curing; 2. the behaviiour of compcated treated soil changed significantly from normally consolidated clay to that of ightly over-consolidated clay; 3. the effect of immmersion on the treated saturated soil however increased the soil volume change resulting in greater time for the consolidated process. It is also reduced the treatment effect as the stress-path tended to behave as for natural slime.
