| Summary: | Built Prior to World War II with three grass strips, Kota Bharu Airport has been progressively developed during the ensuing years into the Major Commercial airport serving the state of Kelantan, and in particular thetown of Kota Bharu after which the airport serving the state of Kelantan,and in particularly the town of Kota Bharu after which the airport isappropriately named. Kota Bharu is not only the seat of the state government, but also the major industrial and religious center of the northeasternpart of Peninsular Malaysia. With a populatin estimated to be over 150,000,the Kota Bharu area is undergoing rapid economic growth, and further industrialization is expected within the next five years. It is apparent that theexisting airport facilities are inadequate in meeting the demand of the area's continued economic development.The purpose of the expanded airport, along with the new east-west Highway presently under construction, is to serve and stimulate commercialand industrial development of the state of Kelantan.
