Summary:In this thesis, a prototype expert system is developed by using TIMM, an expert system shell with the intention of providing a practical mean for the design of fixtures. The program is used for selecting suitable components for a milling fixture based on prismatic components only. An introduction and the relevant design principles to expert systems and fixtures are given. In addition to that, the expert system program development which includes the working procedures, the decision trees and the program flow charts are also discussed. The program has been tested using several examples and the results are found to be consistent. A sample of execution of the program is included as a guidance to users who intend to use this program. Conclusions are made in a few recommendations for further work to be carried out on this project. Last but not least, the appendices consisting of knowledge decision structure and knowledge base are included at the end of the thesis.
