Summary:Pulse dispersion in an optical fiber is a result of several interacting mehanisms. They can be divided into intramodal dispersion (consists of materialsand waveguide dispersion) and intermodal dispersion. However for single mode fibers intramodal dispersion is the main source of dispersion as only one mode propagates along the fiber. Dispersion causes pulse broadening for bothanalogue as well as digital signals which in turn causes Intersymbol interference. Dispersion limits the maximum possible attainable bandwidth for a particular fiber. By carefully designing the fibe, the effects of materials and waveguide dispersion can be made to self canceling to produce a zero dispersion optical fiber. This produces a fiber with a very small pulse broadening and a large bandwidth. This project concentrates on developing a software that can be used to design zero dispersion step index single mode optical fibers of various types of core material operating at a wavelength of minimum attenuation. The approached used, namely Dispersion Shifting, along with theresult with the results obtained is described here. A discussion is provided adn a conclusion is presented at the end.
