Summary: | Fuzzy logic can be used as an alternative method for the control of traffic environments. A traffic environment includes a simple intersection, vehicle traffic and signal lights in the intersection. A fuzzy logic controller is introduced for traffic flow and control. The implementation of a fuzzy logic controller in a single intersection of two one-way streets is presented. A fuzzy llogic simulation software (Fuzzy Logic Development Kit version 2.0) is studied and used to generate fuzzy rules and membership functions for the controller. The results obtained from the implementation of the fuzzy logic controller and conventional controller (fixed cycle time) are tabulated. With the performance criterion being the average waiting time of vehicles, it is shown that the use of fuzzy logic controller results in a better performance. |
