description | Project Background: Kejora (South-East Johor Development Board) had initiated a proposal to build a ferry terminal at Tanjung Belungkur, linking south-east Johor and Singapore. the ferry terminal forms a part of the strategy by the state government to pull more international tourists as well as Singaporeans to the region of South-East Johor especially the renowned resort of Desaru. Approach: Since the ferry temrinal surfaced because of tourism, the thesis starts by looking at what the terminal is ; to the tourist. The ferry terminal is the first structure passed through by the tourist entering the country, after a 50 minutes ride. From Singapore, its is a place for a change of scene, a place to refresh mind and body. From here, the tourist will go by road through a small Malay kampung of Tanjung Belungkur and oil palm plantations ending at the resort of Desaru. The ferry terminal will thus be a pause place; a juncture of the transitional experience of the journey, from Singapore to Desaru. The Site : The site is seen as a mysterious place as it is a mangrove forest, densely populated with Rhizophoraceae. Bakau roots crawl all over the muddy ground where monitor lizards and snakes eye the mud fish and the birds. The whole ecological character of the forest wil provide a stimulant for the change of scene from the very urbanised Singapore. The Issues : (i) Wetland development in the country has always been insensitive usually by clearing the forest and filling up the land. This destroys the living organisms that provide the extreme beauty we always search and try to create with unsatisfying and at times disastrous result. (ii) Due to the 'traffic crawl' to pass the checking point for immigration and custom, the existing entrance from Singapore is chaotic and unpleasant. Thesis Objectives: (i) Assimilating the built environment with the natural environment. (ii) Sustaining the growth of the natural environment and exploiting its beauty to enhance the overall scheme. Design Concept : The emphasis is on conserving the natural scape to capture the mystery of the scene in the Bakau forest; in an environment which is usually remote. The linear movement allows and directs the tourist to experience a sequence of spaces. The analogy is that the building is a spectacle, which allows for maximum view of the surrounding happenings. |
