description | Tourist industry in Malaysia has developed greatly in th 80's. The tourism annual development rate in this country is 34.9% which is the highest in this region. This is due to the incentive given by the government through the realization of teh importance of tourism dna its ability to contribute to teh country's economy. In 1983, this industry contributed M1,214.9 million thorugh the foreign exchange trade. These figures have reinforced the importance and bright future for tourism development in this country especially with the recent 'Pata Coanference' held in Kuala Lumpur. With regard to Sabah; the proximity of teh state to Singapore and Bangkok (The principal visitor gateways to Asean), it's position within the international air route, it's exotic, physical, cultural and social resources as attractions, provide a sound basis for substantial visitor growth if tourism development is actively pusrued. This project begins with the author's realization of the potential for the development of the tourist industry in Sabah. This realization is derived form the need to preserve and expose the arts, architecature and local culture which are fast dissappearing. With this project the author hopes to keep alive these vanishing art, architecture and local culture for the benefit fo future generation and as a link between the past and the future. |
