description In most countries today the removal of ammonium ions from effluents has become a great necessity. In Malaysia effluents from palm oil, rubber industries, domestic wastewater and pig farm are well known of tis high ammoniacal nitrogen content. Such discharge to rivers would badly affect the aquatic life and the source of water supply as most of the raw water are drawn from rivers. The Sg. Scudai Water Treatment Plant (SSWTP) operations have been disrupted numerous time due to raw water pollution. In this work, studies are being carried out to determine the possibilities of reducing/ removing the ammoniacal nitrogen content in raw water. At present the water treatment system in SSWTP only consist of simple process of filtration and chlorination treatment which give little reduction of pollutants in solution. The used of various method for ammonia removal in wastewater treatment such as breakppoint chlorination, aeration, ion-exchange resin and zeolite were studied for possible use in potable water treatment. Comparative studies were carried out with the objective of establishing the best method to be adopted for actual use in the water treatment plant. Since the SSWTP draw the water directly from the river without any impounding reservoir, it is difficult to estimate the concentratiion of ammoniacal nitrogen at any time. Shold the ammoniacal nitrogen concentration be established earlier, breakpoint=chlorination proved to be the suitable and economic method to be use for ammoniacal nitrogen removal in the potable water treatment process.
