description | Overcurrent protection device is the first kind oof protection ever invented to protect power system. Although more complex protection devices had taken over the main prpotection function of a modern power system, oversurrent devices are still the choice for backup protection due to its simplicity bu tyet effective and economical. One major problem with oversurrent coordination is its tedious processes that had often been missed-out due to over-estimation of its importance. Such cases like, effective settings and current transformer's satuaration are often forgotten although the system has extended soo much that the fault level increased to the limit of previous protection designs. Furthermore, the lack of knowledga on the protected equipment's capability leads to inappropriate settings and inadequate protection. Bew sides overview of the oversurrent setting application, this project will focus on the factors that affect coordination studies. It includes the characteristics of the protected equipments, the relaying quantities sources, i.e., current and voltage transformers, and other systems that are main constraints when setting and coordinating the overcurrent devices. Case studies on the current transformer's saturation problems and the effective settings that will affect theperformance of the protection were carried-out, for which theirconclusions may be adopted as a application guide. Further case studies analysed the problems of the coordination that exist in TNB transmission and distributuion system, and suggested alternative solutions. |
