A site along Jalan Sultan Idris Shah within the shopping complexes precint was chosen to automatically gain participants. Own by the Perak State Government, this 2.2 acre land is now accupied by the fire department but will be vacant mid 1991.A special feature of the site is the existing colonial style building built in 1936. Its arched windows and doors, rows of column, pedimented wall and intricate balcony railing captured the locals eyes, dreating itself a landmark to its area.DESIGN CONCEPT - The library amidst the city noise and traffic can act as a 'breathing place' where public can escape to relac while at the same time enjoy the education materials provided.DESIGN PROBLEM - There are two major design problems to be tackled : i) To design a library which will promote and attract public with different background and interest. The focus is on the creation of spaces in which the public is familiar with for reading and getting information. ii) To find a design solution which relates to the setting of the site in the urban context area. The existing building provide constraint towards the building facade treatment.PROJECT BRIEF - The state public library was proposed by the 'Perbandaran Perpustakaan Awam Negeri Perak (PPANPK) to act as the adminstration and processing center to all branch libraries in Perak. At the same time, these library should also provide reading and leading service for the local public.For the purpose of this project thesis, the library's role towards the public will be enhance where spaces for the public will be emphasize.
