Riassunto: | Biodiversity conversation pose challenges that needthe collaboration of scientists, decision makers and the rest of the community. Too often, scientists stress the scientific values that few can appreciate. An integrated approach that highlights economic and social values and benefits will be more palatable to decision makers to recognize more areas for protection. The paper discusses the urgency for tropical regions especially Malaysia to strengthen the basic needs for terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity conservation. It provides examples of local and international efforts to achieve an acceptable percentage of land and marine areas as protected areas. It supports the call for the establishment of a Natural History Institute in Malaysia as the foundation stone for developing a centre of excellence for tropical biodiversity conservation. |
