description | Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Asia and the Pacific is one of the regional centers for PAN International - a global coalition of citizen's groups and individuals who are working to promote sustainable agriculture, and oppose the use of pesticides. PAN Asia and the Pacific is dedicated to ensuring the empowerment of people, especially women, agricultural workers, peasant and indigenous farmers. We are specially committed to protect the safety and health of people, and the environment, from pesticides use. As part of our commitment, PAN Asia and the Pacific has launched the Safe Food Campaign. The focus of the Campaign for 1998 is the "Dangers of Genetic Engineering" in agriculture and food production. Touted as the new age panacea for the world's food woes, the use of genetic engineering in agriculture, particularly in development of food produce, has raised concerns over numerous threats to human health, and the environment. There is also greatconcern over the corporate control of GE and impact on farmers and farming communities. Fundamental to these concerns are the moral and ethical implications of using this technology to own and manipulate life itself. The Campaign emphasizes locally grown, seasonal, food through healthy and sustainable land use, and agriculture. It also calls for the production of food free from pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. We support community-based food production that will protect the health, livelihoods and communities of rural, indigenous peoples, in agriculture - in particular women. |
