description | The 7th National Water Resource Council in 2012 has mandated the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), as the National Centre of Resources and Researches for Lakes and Reservoirs. This work is an ongoing effort by the department to update the information on lakes in Malaysia by incorporating the various types of water bodies, including off-river storage reservoirs, hybrid off-river augmentation systems, and ponds. Lakes, natural or artificial, are central components of aquatic ecosystems supporting various ecosystem services and economic functions to accelerate socio-economic growth for the country. These functions include water supply for domestic, industry, and agricultural needs, hydroelectric generation, aquatic food supply such as freshwater fishes, flood regulation, transportation, as well as recreation, and tourism development. Lakes and related lentic water bodies including swamps, marshes, reservoirs and ponds support habitat for endemic, threatened, and sensitive species. |
