description MALAY, WORLD LANGUAGE : A SHORT HISTORY, Third edition : The world's 290 million speakers of Malay draw their strength from the 1300-year history of Malay as a written language and the ever older oral traditions of their maritime ancestors. The Malay languages has spread throughout Southeast Asia with outlier communities of Malay speakers in Holland, Australia and Sri Lanka. No single book can encompass the history of this ancient, diverse, expanding world language. The present work offers a brief overview of the development of the Malay language from its homeland in prehistoric times in the waterways of western Borneo to its rapid dispersal to Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, northern Java, northern and eastern Borneo, the western Philippines and eastern Indonesia. Its extensive documented interaction with Indian, Persian and Arabic cultures as well as its contacts with Chinese, Thai, Javanese and Khmer elements have yielded a language of great utility and strength. Malay has survived its competitions with three colonial languages and has entered a new millennium with a renewed loyalty from most of its speakers. This study represents a first step at acquainting the general reader with some of the periods and documents in the long and complex history of Malay.
