Summary: | This book includes the context, scope and purpose from the foundation of the framework in developing the return on investment (ROI) to understand the Malaysian research funding system. It looks at ROI for research funded by grants from the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). The final sample comprises 3,295 research grants, of which 3,093 are for Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), 178 for Prototype Research Grant Scheme (PRGS), 18 for Transdisciplinary Research Grant Scheme (TRGS), and 6 for Long Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS); these consist of completed projects which were started from 2013 to 2015. The data reveals how different types of research grant regarding purpose and requirements lead to another kind of returns. Although this is the first country-wide attempt to formulate the ROI of research funding scheme in Malaysia, it remains to be seen that ROI is a suitable measurement of success. There are several recommendations if implemented, will contribute to a more comprehensive research management system.
