Description
Summary:This thesis is a report on the design to propose a new planned maintenance system for the Fast Attack Craft (Gun) or the FAC(G) squadaron of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) with the aim of optimizing the operational availability of the individual ship of the squadron and, by extension, the whole squadron, as well as the cost in acahieving this operational availability. Planned maitenance involves a trade off between the need for maintenance against the desire to operate the equipment to the maximum. For a warship where the individual maintenance requirement of the various equipment of the interdependent systems overlaps, this trade off is between carrying out these maintenance requirements after a certain period of operation with its rewultant costs againgst another operational period and costs. This planned and predetermined period of operationally available time is the desired output of this design. By determining the possible operational period between major maintenance requirements, a series of alternative maintenance programmes can be develpoed. These alternative can then be evaluated using a cost-benefit model with the criteria of net benefit per operationally available week, a criteria which best incorporates the essence of maximizing operational availability and cost, This thesis has determined that a 50 week period between major maintenance periods within an overall structure of 4 slipping periods and 3 refit periods between the Long Refit periods is the optimal pallned maintenance requirements of the major system onboard, namely the main propulsion system. The design was tested for sensitivitiy on the various cost and time parameters and it proved robust within the test range of 30 percent of the man.
