Summary: | This paper examines the use of vereor in Latin literature, in order to clarify its meaning and distinguish it from other verbs of fearing, with which it shares meaning features as well as syntactic constructions. In this study, great importance is attached to the testimony of Cicero, an author who combines the status of speaker and scholar of the language. This paper argues that vereor expresses a complex feeling conceptualising three elements at the same time: respect, shame, and apprehension. |
