| description | The timeliness of the article refers to a keen interest in the interaction of language and culture in geographical names. The paper provides the linguocultural analysis of macrotoponyms of Chile, features of formation of macrotoponyms and their etymology. Moreover, a classification of geographical names is offered. This article also highlights the role of studying toponyms for linguistics, history and society as a whole. The linguocultural analysis showed the prevalence of Indian backgrounds in macrotoponyms. They can be divided into several groups: fitotoponyms, zootoponyms, toponyms related to environmental conditions, lifestyle, religion, geography and geology. Geographical names appeared after the discovery of America by Europeans are related to historical events, personalities and discoverers.
