description Studies on antic perspective mostly deal with the works of art themselves, discussing whether antic systems that could have existed in Antiquity and whether they could have been the graphic transcriptions of optic theories. Some tried to include the spectator in their analysis of depth. But no one realised that, if any point of view could be determined in the image, an observer is necessarily supposed and that this observer, even being not illustrated, has a History. The aim of this paper is to follow some stages of this history in Greek and Roman art, until the time of August.
