| description | In the Ist century B.C., the city of Stratonicea absorbs the sanctuary of Panamara and the former god Zeus Karios, which has not politic weight anymore, is replaced by Zeus Panamaros, a god more local and civic. The will to legitimize this new god, protector of the city, is expressed by staging a warlike epiphany called the “miracle” of Zeus Panamaros. This episode narrates how the god, with spectacular manifestations, defeated Labienus and his troops while they were trying to attack the sanctuary. A particular ceremony figured the rise of the god (anodos) and the procession symbolized then the god’s return in the sanctuary of Panamara after a stay in Stratonicea. The representations on the city’s coinage could illustrate this anabasis featuring the statue of Zeus carried by a horse: they could materialize the introduction of this new cult. The sanctuary of Panamara was thus a leverage to integrate and inaugurate a new religious identity and it shows a willingness to take ownership of a local culture through a spectacular setup of the power of Zeus Panamaros. |
