| Summary: | This article studies the electoral campaign of the Uruguayan National Party in the national elections of 1954, by which it entered as a minority of the collegiate executive with Colorado majority. The nationalists, who had been divided since the early thirties, took steps towards unification. Three tendencies voted within the National Party: Herrerism, the Nationalist Popular Movement and White Reconstruction. Despite the return of the latter to the party, the leadership of long-standing and controversial leader Luis Alberto de Herrera still aroused visceral rejections and was the main stumbling block to real programmatic unity. This article examines the proposals and propaganda of each of the party sectors from the party press, with which they sought to solve the country's problems. In addition, the Independent Nationalist Party is included, which differs from the National Party, but that shares some ideas, history, and tradition with its former companions.
