Summary: | As well as their fellow citizens from other parts of France, the burghers of Caen were concerned about their after life, the salvation of their souls, and the loss of their network of support, family, friends and the like. The registers of the notaries in Caen have kept hundreds of contracts of foundations of masses by which the burghers were attempting to soothe their worries. They wished that these foundations came into effect in their lifetime so that their generosity and attachment to their churches be known by their contemporaries and that the protection of God and his saints be garanteed. |
