description | Only a few years ago, the main question was whether to consider archaeology as a discipline or not. Currently, and specifically highlighted during a study day devoted to the subject, the issue is rather that of archaeology as a profession, focusing on archaeologists themselves, players in the construction of this scientific culture. An enquiry carried out for the event sheds a new light on the perception of an often cited expression « from dig to museum », accentuating the opinions of archaeologists themselves. We overviewed different facets of archaeologists today, looking closely at what has changed. More than ever, the plurality of archaeology is evident. From a vocational call to the profession of archaeologist, we observe in this 21st century the emergence of a « professional group », comprising different specialists intervening in the operational process, all linked to the same methodology and archaeological rigour. A glimpse of a divergence between professional representations and reality are revealed by this enquiry. Could we be witnessing the emergence of a professional identity crisis? |
