description | The nature and the degree of understanding that peoples have of one another, the means of accessing such knowledge and the channels through which it is transmitted, along with the effects of this glance cast upon the other contribute to shape diplomatic relations and political as well as cultural exchanges between nations. In mid-XVIIth Century England, the unparalleled rise of the press and the near concomitance of the English Civil War and the French Fronde, incited the English to look at and observe France and the French. The English newspapers weekly reported the evolution of the conflict in France, brought political information to their readers and, from time to time, ventured to offer them a comparison with the situation at home. The success of the press testifies of the strong curiosity the English had for everything French. It went with a quicker and wider circulation, throughout the country, of the information and the works relating to France. Nevertheless, this new production, born of specific circumstances, did not supplant the older output of translations of French books, nor did it put an end to the caricatures and stereotypes. |
