description The subject of the study is the state of higher mental functions (HMF) in children depending on the place of residence. The total neuropsychological study has been conducted among 60 second-class pupils living in the country, 60 children of the same age living in the town and 58 city school children. The study is based on Vygotsky’s concept of the cultural-historical psychology and Luria’s theory of the systemic dynamic localization of higher mental functions in the brain cortex. The results indicate that the type of settlement influences the formation of HMF. The main differences in their characteristics are found among the children living in the country and in the city. The primary school children living in the town are similar to the city coevals in verbal functions and arbitrary activity regulation, in other respects they are closer to the rural ones, coming short of the level of visual-spatial functions formation.
