description Microbial contamination is one of the main problems faced in the micropropagation of plant species in the world. New alternatives are being looked for the use of natural products to substitute or to attenuate the frequent use of chemical compounds. Essential oils from several aromatic plants have shown a wide spectrum activity to microorganisms. Essential oil from leaves and stem of Cymbopogon nardus is a volatile oil with antiseptics, deodorants, insecticidal, tonics and stimulants properties. C. nardus essential oil was tested for antimicrobial activity against fungi and bacteria isolated from in vitro plant culture by using disc- diffusion and agar dilution by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) assays. The essential oil inhibited 100% of microbial growth of fungi and bacteria strains tested. A 0.03% concentration of the essential oil controlled 75% of bacterial strains. These results could be a valuable alternative solution to control contaminant microorganism for in vitro plants culture. Key words: antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, citronella oil, natural products
