Description
Summary:The 16th and 17th centuries, which are of interest to me, were a period of intolerance not only from the Catholic side, but also among Protestants. However, it cannot be evaluated by contemporary standards. In the 17th century, rape and abuses were committed by both sides and were connected with the increasingly powerful position of the Roman Catholic Church, which, with the aid of the Jesuits, began to introduce reforms in the post-Tridentine Church. Also, anti-Habsburg uprisings took place in the 17th century, which were organized by the Princes of Transylvania and resulted from the infringement of religious freedom and the political ambitions of their leaders. In The Smalcald Articles, which were a supplement to the Augsburg Confession and the foundation of Lutheran doctrine and liturgy written in 1530, Luther specifically lists and rejects all the practices and superstitious beliefs that, in his opinion, lead to idolatry (worship), i.e. religious adoration of the visible and invisible reality like the Mass, pilgrimages, religious orders, relics of the saints and the Pope. This article shows how Simonides presents the issue of idolatry in his autobiography Imprisonment, Liberation and Peregrination of Jan Simonides and His Comrade Tobias Masnik.
