description Research Objectives: the authors have set the tasks to study experimentally and analytically the conditions for occurrence of white layers, their physical and mechanical properties and phase composition by the example of NiTi as one of the most common technique representatives of shape memory materials. Materials and equipment: Two alloys Ti[50]Ni[47,5]Fe[2,5] - ТН-1К and Ti[49,4]Ni[50,6] were studied experimentally on the machine SMT-1, tribometer-sclerometry TC-1 and nanohardness gage "CSEM instruments". The results: It was shown that the white layers are formed both by simple compression, and at sliding friction. Structural-phase states of white layers depends on pressure, sliding velocity and temperature in a contact zone and represent a quasi-equilibrium austenitic-martensitic system as a conglomerate of highly dispersed nanosized crystals of both phases. White layers have a number of special properties, significantly different from the properties of metal matrix. A high fatigue strength of white layer defines high durability of NiTi.
