Summary: | The fierce opposition to proposals for sharing the waters of the Ebro which emerged between 2000 and 2004 carried on from earlier forms of mobilisation at the beginning of the 1970s. The area in dispute, the Ebro basin, is at once the source of the conflict and the stake in it. It is there that opposition to proposals for sharing water resources is most vigorous. The area itself is also the object of the conflict. This dual dimension in which the river is conceived is clearly reflected in the regional press. Never neutral, that press is at once a medium for the conveyance of information and a party in the dispute, and as such, it has a lasting influence on public opinion. Based on an analysis of the discourse pursued by the Aragonese press in the early days of opposition to plans for sharing of the waters, this article seeks to highlight the role of the media in arousing a regional consciousness. |
