description | European painters have depicted Greek and Roman mythologies for centuries. Most of these narratives take place at certain locations in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This research will focus on the mountains that are mentioned in the mythology and give examples of the paintings that show related tales. These pictures are selected from a wide span of time from the Baroque period until the 19th century. Mount Olympos was the home of twelve Olympian Gods. Apollo and the Muses lived on Mount Parnassus. Two springs sacred to the Muses, were located on the Mount Helicon. Paris was living as a shepherd on Mount Ida in Anatolia. Ganymede was abducted by Zeus from Mount Ida. Anchises was tending sheep on Mount Ida when he was seduced by Aphrodite. Zeus was raised on Mount Ida in Crete. Seleneʼs lover Endymion slept peacefully in a cave of Mount Latmos. |
