| description | The demand for more solid and critical research about the Franciscan Order has been continuous over time. This void has become evident due, among other factors, to the increased attention devoted to other religious orders that operated in Asia, especially that of the Jesuits. The aim of this article is the study of Franciscan missionary action in the 18th century. Firstly, it makes a brief review of the literature dealing with the Spanish Franciscan missions in China. Secondly, we explain the process of implementation of the Franciscan order in the Empire since its arrival in the Philippine Islands. Finally, we examine the missionary strategies implemented in the eighteenth century through the experiences of Friar Diego de San José. It is through him that we better understand Chinese action. Native people were key agents with whom Spanish missionaries lived and worked so Franciscan’s labour on China is also explained thanks to them. |
