Objective: to understand the feelings of the institutionalized elderly related to aging and death. Method: this is a qualitative study conducted in seven elderly who are institutionalized, in July 2012. Results: the analysis of speeches made possible the construction of three thematic categories: Seizing the stale, unveiling death and institutionalization feeling. Some elderly understand aging as a natural process and not others believe they are old. Death, in its majority, was desired by the elderly, and in many instances correlated with institutionalization. Living in an institution triggers triggers feelings of loneliness, frustration or abandonment. Final Thoughts: results depict the need for better planning, institutions, offering psychological support, capable of delivering an aging process more humane and pleasant to the studied population. |
