Description
Summary:This article aims at analyzing the implementation of mechanisms to preserve internal order through emergency resources by governments in the democratic-liberal Uruguay of the mid-twentieth century. The analysis focuses on the construction of social conflict and the notion of danger by the political leaders in a specific political regime and in an international context defined by the ideology of the Second World War. Particular attention is put on different spaces of enunciation where the rulers deployed their strategies to argue the relevance of the use of authoritarian resources to resolve social conflicts. The objective is the identification of the persistence of authoritarian traditions in a country that has been historically characterized, above all, by the democratic features which differentiate it from the rest of Latin America.
