description La Vénus d’Ille by Prosper Mérimée seems to focus on the very emblem of feminine beauty. In reality, the short story is more concerned with the masculine: what it means to be and how one is a man. Masculinity is revealed to be multiple and problematic, taking shape in contradictory and ambiguous figures, and is situated at the heart of flows and forms of desire of which the fantastical tale explores the grey areas. The homoeroticism that is suggested as a result calls into question the normative construction of gender established and transmitted through the law of the father and the institution of marriage.
