Description
Summary:
At f irst sight, the Disrobing of Christ (El Espolio) in the Szépművészeti Museum in Budapest shocks and almost repels one due to the hardness of the canvas surface and of the forms, at least in so far as the hard sky is concerned. The style seems in entire opposition to that of El Greco. This paper analyses this style, and argues that it was deliberately chosen and realized by an artist belonging to El Greco’s “circle”.
