Summary: | During the last few years, the concept of psychological intervention in emergency settings has received a growing attention. This is also due to the dissemination of international guidelines that promote direct intervention for the safeguarding of mental health. The guidelines issued by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee/ IASC are surely the most complete, as they cover all the possible psychological implications of the various natural or man-made disasters. Based on scientific researches and on the lessons learnt through aid interventions in many catastrophe scenarios, IASC guidelines provide suggestions about the organization of assistance in the psychological realm.
