description The aim of this paper is to re-examine the church affiliation of Serbian King Stefan Dragutin (1276-1282) in the period from 1291 to 1316. Shortly after the descent from the Serbian throne, Dragutin became one of the most powerful Hungarian feudal lords. Since 1288 he expanded his relations with Rome, which culminated in 1291 when the pope took him under his protection. This detail had been used by a certain authors to acknowledge Dragutin as the unquestionable Roman Catholic who remained so until his death in 1316. This interpretation is particularly expressed in Croatian historiography, from the second half of 19th century until the end of 20th century. It can also be found with some authors within the Serbian historiography, but unlike the Croatian, Serbian historiography did not accept this interpretation. Contemporary Serbian historians see Dragutin's transition to Rome's safeguard as an act of political pragmatism whereas the Croatian historians persist in the interpretation that Dragutin, having received papal protection, became a Roman Catholic. Some even wrote that he remained so for the rest of his life. The problem with this assertion is that it is very superficial and is not subjected to any deeper critical analysis of the original sources. Moreover, it is noticeable that not all of the historical sources were used by Croatian historians who dealt with this topic. The sole identification of the act of papal protection with the change of religion, which is insisted upon, has no foundation. All of this is discussed in the first part of this paper. The second part of this paper is focused on further insight and critical analysis of the sources which treat Dragutin's religious feelings after March 15, 1291. Clearly all of the sources address him as "schismatic" which is a term used in the middle Ages to mark an Orthodox Christians. Even if at some point, Dragutin became a protégé of the Roman Catholic Church, he most certainly agreed to this only formally and remained an Orthodox for the rest of his life.
