description Aim: to analyze the perception of surgical patients of a university hospital concerning the educational actions developed during the perioperative period. Method: qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, performed with eight patients from a General Surgery Unit. The statements were collected through semi-structured interviews from March to May of 2016. Data evaluation was by analysis of thematic content. Results: three categories emerged: educational actions developed during the perioperative period in patients' perception; contributions of educational actions; and feelings expereienced by patients during the perioperative period. Conclusion: it is necessary to rethink the method of educational actions developed by the multiprofessional health team, as well as to enrich the nursing-patient communication process, in order to recognize the work developed.
