| Summary: | The analysis of the discourses of the professionals constitutes a useful tool in the study
of the medico-scientific production in the context of the medical historiography. It is
emphasized in Hobsbawm´s words: “for the reconstruction of the environment and the
temperament of an epoch” and of its actors, when nobody exists to remember them.
A product of historical research is presented, part of the doctoral thesis “The medical
professionals in the Universidad de Cartagena. Period 1908-1962. A Model of medical
professional: state, centralist, anatomo-clinical and individual”. The medical discourse of
Eusebio Vargas Vélez was searched in books of enrollments, tests of subjects, certificates
and thesis, in the archives and libraries of the Facultad de Medicina of the Universidad
de Cartagena, Colombia, in the publications of the Colombian medico-scientific societies,
in hospitals in the city and in the personal archives of professors and graduates. Nine
publications, seven scientific texts and five letters to education authorities were found.
Five of them are related with urologic clinic. Eusebio Vargas Vélez although was educated
under the medical French influence, he appropriated himself of the North American one.
He was compromised with the advance of the science and the technology applied to the
medicine, especially of the urology. He led the education and expansion of the discipline
in the local and national area when the half of the 20th century was approaching. Rev.
