| description | The "Cortina del Porto di Messina" is a linear complex of eleven rectangular blocks. It is around nine hundred meters long and is located inside the natural port of the city. It was completed in thirty years, between 1930 and 1958. Giuseppe Samonà was the mastermind, both directly and indirectly, of this symbolic work for the city, in two ways: contributing, as a young architect in 1930, with the winning entry for the competition and then designing eight out of the eleven blocks, six by himself. This essay focusses on the first phase (1930-1940), after the national competition for the typological facade of 1930, when the design and the construction of the 1st and 2nd block of INA, 3rd of Banca di Sicilia, 7th of Palazzo Littorio, 8th of INAIL offices took place. The argument goes that Giuseppe Samonà developed the main concept and guise for the project. It remains a very important legacy for the city, a city that was destroyed at the beginning of the century and progressively re-built, with a new identity that was defined, promoted and shaped from past memories and recent events: a state of 20th century city planning that requires understanding and protection where deserved and where it demonstrates quality architecture and therefore cultural.
La Cortina del Porto di Messina di Giuseppe Samonà: gli isolati degli anni Trenta del Novecento
La Cortina del Porto di Messina è un insieme lineare di undici isolati rettangolari per una estensione di circa novecento metri, situati all’interno del porto naturale della città. La loro realizzazione occupa quasi trenta anni: tra il 1930 ed il 1958. Giuseppe Samonà è stato protagonista, direttamente ed indirettamente, di questa opera, fortemente simbolica per la storia della città, partecipando, giovane, al concorso di idee vincitore del 1930 e progettando con certezza almeno otto degli undici isolati, di cui sei da solo. Questo saggio si concentra sulla prima fase, dopo il Concorso di idee nazionale sulla Facciata Tipo del 1930, della progettazione e realizzazione degli isolati 1° e 2° dell’INA, del 3° della Banca di Sicilia, del 7° del Palazzo Littorio, dell’8° la sede dell’INAIL, tutti tra il 1930 ed il 1940. La tesi che si sostiene è che Giuseppe Samonà è colui che ha ideato l’immagine ed i caratteri architettonici dell’intero progetto. Si tratta di un patrimonio architettonico particolarmente significativo per la storia della città, di una città distrutta agli inizi del novecento e tutta ricostruita successivamente, che ha dunque una nuova “identità” tutta da formare, costruire, promuovere, sulla memoria del passato: una condizione di città “tutta novecentesca” da capire e salvaguardare in modo specifico lì dove lo merita e dove costituisce qualità, architettonica e quindi culturale. |
