description It is shown that contemporary psychology appears to be hindered by its orientation to natural science and experimental methodology. An opening to more combinations of methods, to an integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches is needed. Several foundations for such an integration (pragmatism, constructivism, dialectics) are given. An integration is only possible if qualitatively orientated studies have a clear conception, a study design, and a research process model which fits into general scientific standards. Four basic research designs are discussed (exploratory studies, descriptive studies, correlational studies, and causal analyses) and quantitative as well as qualitative solutions developed. This seems to be central for an integrative understanding of research methods in psychology.
