description The authors describe the evolution of the palimpsest concept from its inclusion into the architectural vocabulary to its implementation in design practice. The origins of this concept in culture and the internal prerequisites for the adoption of the palimpsest concept in architecture are considered. We review the architectural interpretations of palimpsest and transformation of the concept into a formal method in the era of postmodernism. Attention to the palimpsest in the contemporary architecture under the influence of the sustainability concept and the new opportunities provided by digital technologies are investigated. The potential of the palimpsest concept is determined, which makes it timely and desirable in the present and future architectural projects.
