description Objective: To compare the perceived parenting styles of patients with panic disorder and with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), to compare the findings with patients with general medical disorders, and to identify the factors associated with panic disorder and GAD Material and Methods: This was an unmatched case-control study conducted at out-patient clinic, Songklanagarind Hospital, Hat Yai, Songkhla, Thailand, from September 2015 to February 2016. The sample was divided into 3 groups: panic disorder, GAD and the control group. There were 50 members in each group. A self-administered questionnaire was used, consisting of demographic characteristics and a parenting style questionnaire. Anxiety and depressionscreening using the hospital anxiety and depression scale (Thai HADS) was included. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics presented in the form of mean, frequency and percentage, and multiple logistic regression. Results: Fifty patients of each group: panic disorder, GAD and control were sampled. The sociodemographic characteristics were similar in all 3 groups. There were no significant differences in parenting styles between panic disorder, GAD, and the control group. All groups mostly had democratic parenting styles (74%, 72%, and 86% respectively). Compared with control, panic disorder hada statistically significant association with marital status [odd ratio (OR)adj=3.9, 95% confidence interval (95% CI)=1.6, 9.6] and rural resident (ORad=3.4, 95% CI=1.3, 9.1); GAD had a statistically significant association with marital status (ORadj=3.3, 95% CI=1.3, 8.3) and male sex (ORadj=4.0, 95% CI=1.4, 11.1). Conclusion: There were no significant differences in parenting styles between panic disorder, GAD, and the control group. Panic disorder had a statistically significant association with marital status and rural resident. GAD had a statistically significant association with marital status and male sex.
